After years of ripping my pa for his socks and sandals antics, I must confess that I love nothing more than the feeling of soft comfortable socks with a cool open-air breeze! However, after embracing this passion when I stepped off the flight from Dubai to London this summer, my best friend gently reminded me that, in so doing, I had lost all her respect… 😉
Well Miss Bates, you are soon going to be forced to eat your words…trend alert…socks with sandals, heels, peep toes….you name it, socks with breezy shoes are hip and happening!
Socks and Sandals Trend ALERT! OK Magazine August 2011
Now, socks and sandals is nothing new (thanks dad), the Chinese have been doing it for years. On my tour through China in 2005 I marvelled at how cool these little doll like ladies looked with their lacy socks and geeky sandals combos. In fact, at that time, I looked to the heavens and prayed that this is a trend that would find its way to the West….well, it only took 6 years for the universe to hear me…given its size…not bad timing I’d say!
Socks and Sandals on Schlebs...you know you want to!
Seen all over the catwalks, it is only a matter of time before you (Miss Bates included) will find yourself steopping out of the house and sighing with the pleasure of comfort and breeze!
PS: Tights, with the toe bits, plus sandals….still not acceptable however. You know who you are Miss MacRonald! 😉
If you have been to any European (or international) airport in the last 6 months, you will surely have noticed an increased number of….Chinese travellers. I have certainly noticed them. Largely because they form large queues for the customs counter, which I used to saunter up to without any trouble. Not now – tax-free has become popular. Grumble grumble.
It is also suddenly apparent in Dubai. Chinese shop assistants grace all the designer stores….where normally it was only Russian assistants that gave away the nationality of the serious clientele. What happened in China 6 months ago for such an obvious increase to have taken place? I am very curious. Anyhow…how does this post relate to diamonds I hear you say?
Well, along with hotel rooms, designer bags, flights around the world etc…the Chinese are buying gold and diamonds and, according to my source at the London Diamond Borse, they love solitaire diamonds. Thus the price for a solitaire diamond has practically doubled since this time last year! Great news for those who already own a few of the stones…although, you might want to consider re-valuating for your insurance, but slightly annoying for anyone who has been saving up for something special…you gotta keep saving!
And if you’ve got a bit of cash languishing in the bank, earning you a pittance in interest….or devaluing against inflation in most cases, why not treat yourself to those diamond earrings or that Cartier watch you had your eye on?! The Chinese don’t look like they are going to retreat any time soon – so the value can only increase.
Tiffany "Grace" Earrings, £4,250....bargain!
You may also take this opportunity to subtly persuade your loved one to “invest” in such a piece for you – men respond better to “it’s an investment opportunity” than “because they are so beautful and sparkly!”
Wind back the film scroll 20 years and you would be sure to find a ten-year-old me in a pair of just-above-the-knee blue culottes. I loved them. I could be girly and climb trees – hurrah! Even then I wanted to have it all.
The today me….30-year-old me, can also be found pretending to wear a skirt, but actually feeling very smug at being out in a bar in a pyjama-esque pant suit…yes, the culotte has made a come back. But this time the culotte is no longer happy to be known as a culotte. She has decided to re-brand. She is THE PALAZZO PANT.
- Dorothy Perkins Palazzo Pant Suit
This is my little baby – a pant suit with flared trousers…formerly known as culottes…today known as palazzo pants…but really, is there any difference? Flare, palazzo or culotte? I don’t care – I just know I love them and am actually looking forward to this trend!
I must also say, Dorothy Perkins has stepped it up a notch lately. The quality of the fabric and the fit of my pant suit is very good for the price tag. All hail DP.
Now, where are those pyjamas…
I’m away – in respite….well, sort of – seeing friends and attending Phil Collins’s wedding…yep, Phil Collins…my cousin…ok not THE Phil Collins…my Phil Collins is way nicer 🙂
My cousin’s new wife requested headwear from her guests…I could not let her down. It’s the first time I have worn a formal hat – well, I tell you – it shall not be the last – felt so good! I should have been a victorian man.
Here it is:
